No.6671

I was in a hurry to get ready for Elementary school. I had overslept and missed the bus, so I had to walk. I quickly put on my Tommy Hilfiger overalls, my shirt, and my sneakers. I grabbed my backpack and ran out the door.

I didn’t notice that I had forgotten to buckle both of the straps on my overalls. The bib was hanging down loosely, covering my shirt. The straps were dangling behind my back.

I arrived at school just before the bell rang. I rushed to my classroom and took my seat. I looked around and saw my classmates staring at me. Some of them were giggling, some of them were whispering, and some of them were pointing. I felt confused and embarrassed. I wondered what was wrong with me.

I looked down and saw my unbuckled bib. I felt a surge of panic. I had forgotten to fasten my overalls! I felt like everyone was laughing at me. I wished that I could disappear.

I heard a voice next to me. It was my best friend, Sarah. She smiled at me and whispered, “Don’t worry, Tommy. I’ll help you.” She reached over and gently pulled up my bib. She fastened both straps to the buttons on my bib. She smoothed out my shirt and gave me a thumbs up. She said, “There you go. You look great.”

I felt a wave of relief. I smiled back at Sarah and said, “Thank you, Sarah. You’re the best.” I felt my confidence return. I realized that it was not a big deal. I had made a mistake, but it was not the end of the world. I had a friend who cared about me and helped me.

I looked around and saw that my classmates had stopped staring. They had moved on to other things. I felt like I belonged. I was ready to face the day.

I thanked Sarah again and said, “You’re a good friend, Sarah. I owe you one.” She said, “No problem, Tommy. That’s what friends are for.” We high-fived each other and turned our attention to the teacher.
