Hey guys,

did you wear your overalls at school? And if so, did you wear them openely or hidden?

Well, I used to wear overalls quite often at school. Sometimes more often, sometimes less. I started our wearing them covered by my jacket or sweater. I was always very anxious about it, but after I had to show them publicly while undressing before PE, I wore them openly after that. Not only that I went to school without anything to hide it, I began to wear them more often.

But I got also bullied a lot fot it. Well, I got bullied in general, but with overalls it kinda made it worse. Other boys made fun of me and actually pulled me by the straps to ridcule me. I like getting pulled by the straps in private, but this public humilation was really embarassing and uncomfortable. I guess it's quite a difference, if someone who likes you doesit for fun or if someone just wants to be mean.

One day it kinda escalated and I got pulled and carried by my overalls from one of the stronger kids over the hald schoolyard. It was a really painful and embarassing situation - I still hate this guy for doing this to me today!

Nowadays in society anything moderately out there is considered "too different" to accept.

It all depends on your mind set and whether you care enough of what people think of your clothes to judge you.

I tried it only once, in kindergarden class of 1990 (b1984). One full day of "look a boy in GIRLS pants" - mostly from the girls actually - was enough to not attempt that ever again. By that time overalls had already (at least in northern Europe) been labeled a distinctly girl thing to wear - and it is still perceived as such to this day.

I wore overalls like crazy out of school however. Lightwashed denim were my favorites, and I got a new pair whenever they were available and I could persuade my parents to buy them. I would run straight to my room when coming home from school and change into overalls. I rarely spend time with my classmates out of school so this was easy, and if there were any chance I would run into other kids, I would wear something over them.

I outgrew my final pair in the 1997 or 1998. By that time it was seriously hard to get overalls in sizes of a fast growing teenage boy in this part of the world, and I didn't get to wear overalls again for a very long time. I never really stopped hoping I would pick it up again some day, and finally a couple of years ago, I seized the opportunity. Now I own 8-10 different pairs (thanks asos!) and wear them proudly in public!

I never wore bib overalls back in the 1990's when I was in school. I didn't know which stores carried bibs at the time.

Several guys and girls in my classes wore overalls the proper way, with both straps on their shoulders and fastened to the bib. I couldn't help feeling slightly excited and aroused at the sight of another classmate in overalls. However, I felt too embarrassed to compliment them on their fashion, or ask where they had bought their overalls from.

A few students wore their overalls with one strap unfastened and hanging down their back -- or with the bib down. I despised that style and thought it look rather dorky and stupid. It's like buying an umbrella when you live in a climate where it never rains. The reason people buy overalls is because they like the bib against their chest and the straps that hold it up.

>> No.4224

People wear overalls for different reasons (and to each his own!). Personally, I do it, not because I particularly like the feel, but because I like the look of the extra denim and how that particular look makes me stand out a bit. To that end, I definitely think the one-strap look has merit if it makes sense for the particular outfit (eg. if you have some print in your tee that you would like to be visible, in addition to the bib), and I do it myself on occasion.

I fully agree with you about the bib down look though, that is just pointless and super impractical, in addition to looking stupid. Despite it being a distinctly 90s thing, there are still pontiffs in the fashion blogoshpere that want to give the impression that this is now the only way bibs should be worn as a fashion statement. Rather sad relly...

Many school-aged kids can be VERY judgemental! It's seems like any clothing fashion that is moderately out there is considered "too different" to accept.

I am the type of person who wants to be different and doesn't care who likes my overalls and who dislikes my overalls.

Others might ask why you're wearing them because most people don't and you should tell them because you like them. Don't let other people run your life!

I loved wearing overalls in the 1990s! "Sears" overalls were my favorite. They wore out so comfortable.

People at school would tell me, "Dude you gotta have one side of those overalls unbuckled!" I told them, "no... I want to wear both straps!" I didn't care what they thought of me.

Great to see a mainstream retailer selling shortalls to guys!

>> No.2354

It's nice to see that the legs can be unrolled. Is that true for the darker one too?

>> No.2355

Yes it is.

>> No.2356

Haha, that is funny. I checked with with customer service and they said the legs were sewn that way. I guess they didn't bother to take one out of the package.

>> No.2357

Yes, i also contacted Topman once about exact measurements about the long model (2013). I told them that I could not find applicable information for that model in their lists. They bothered me to send the lists as PDF to me. So I felt lucy and ordered initially a too large size, looked inside and there was sewn inside a lable with "Fits size X to Y". For luck I had a very thankful customer for the largest size available. I ordered again a smaller size which fit better on the waist (fits size 32 to 34). Unfortunately Topman's inseam sizes are not good for skinny tall people. Either thin large people have to live with very baggy fit to match length or they have to deal with hipster-like floodwater fit.
But I totally agree - the customer service is either lazy or stupid or both! Hell, where is the damn problem to send one person with ruler to storage let him take measuerments and provide that information correctly to customers? Sizes with letters from nXS to nXL are stupid as hell. Go metric or at least adopt WxL in inches!

So wait, can the legs of the shortalls really be rolled down to regular overalls? I recently bought dungarees from topman as well, but I got overalls instead. If I can unroll the legs, I'll buy some of their shortalls as well!

If you can´t pee in them, they are for girls. Fake fly really sucks ;-)

>> No.4767

I love wearing shortalls. But the trouble with so many mens shortalls is that the legs are too long often down past the knee. I have bought a few "womans" shortalls from eBay with much better inseam 5" or 6". I make sure that a) they are not "girly" and b) the hips are not too wide.
For me these are now mens shartalls

>> No.4768

lol "shartalls"... please no

you look really hot in those shortalls though! I eve got overalls from BoohooMan that have a fake fly, so its not just womens.

To Martin: That’s a bit hypocritical – the galleries are full of commercial photos! Many of the shirtless boys featured in the masthead picture are from "Model Promotions" - i.e. commercial photos.

Overalls are awesome becase you don't need to wear a belt to keep them up and they fit loose around your body.

I bought a pair of the Vibes overalls. They just came in the mail yesterday.

The material is high-quality and the color looks great, but the "bib" part of the overalls is very small! (In other words, these overalls have a very small bib.) The "bib" part only covers the bottom half of my chest.

I am very disappointed, because these overalls looked so sexy in the product photo. Going to send these back for a refund...
